BREAKING apple news

When your favorite consumer tech company is also the best consumer tech company in the world, and said tech company is generally a magnet for hyperbole and blind customer loyalty -- while also producing more products at higher levels of quality than ever before -- what's left to really wish for? Plenty, it turns out. I'm not talking about a new Apple car or even any special new product category. As it turns out, I just want some simple things to work better. I'd like to see some refinements, really, small shifts in priority from Apple's various teams. Right now, most of Apple's products are like big glorious plate glass windows... that somehow still have a sticker attached to one outside corner. Why? So what do I hope to see in 2016? 1. Better Apple Watch Battery Life My Apple Watch is pretty cool and all, but you know what's not cool? Having to charge the thing every single day. Sure, I'm resigned to the fact (and habit) of charging my iPhone every sin...

Five ways to celebrate a digital Christmas

Image
Nothing says Christmas more than watching that Harry Potter movie you've already seen 2,900 times, eating a mountain of lukewarm turkey and trying to work out where you're going to put all those new socks. Let's not forget the traditional argument with your other half about whose job it was to buy all the batteries for the children's new toys - which are currently a source of tension because nobody can turn them on. Am I right? If that sounds all too familiar and you fancy keeping the whole thing a bit more spiritual this year without giving up your gadgets, here are five ways to enjoy Christmas online: Log on to a virtual church and talk about Star WarsImage copyrightGetty ImagesImage captionThe hope awakens? Everyday Church Online, which launched in the UK in September, runs virtual services every Sunday for a net-based congregation from around the world. Everyone's invited to log on and chat while a recorded sermon is streamed So far, people from 61 differe...

More than 45,000 drones have been registered with the FAA since Monday

Image
This month, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that drone owners have until February 19th, 2016, to register their units. That window opened on Monday, and in a new release, the FAA gave a short update on how many owners have registered so far. "The agency has seen strong initial demand, with more than 45,000 registrations completed since the site opened for business Monday afternoon," according to the release by the agency. It's a healthy start to the FAA's program, although it's still a considerable distance from full compliance, and the FAA will need to keep registration going at a strong pace to register so many drones already in the hands of consumers. In the statement, the FAA says more than 400,000 drones could be sold this holiday season alone. Any drones purchased after December 21st must be registered before they take their first flights, and the agency's release announced some website downtime "in advance of an expected rush of cust...

Microsoft let people vote for its next game and they chose a word game

Image
Microsoft decided to let fans pick what Windows' next casual game should be, and today the votes are in: it'll be a word game. I know what you're thinking: that's not very exciting. Fair assessment, but how exciting could that reveal have ever been? By definition this is a casual game — something kind of dry that you can pick up and put down, something that's never going to impress you or require much learning. Would Hearts or chess have been any more exciting? Okay, I might have been into chess. It just seems like a practical thing to have. "LETS" IS CLEARLY PLACED ILLEGALLY Microsoft doesn't say what specific games will be in its Ultimate Word Gamescollection, but its logo looks a littleScrabble-y, so that's a possibility (although, neither LP or SY are in theScrabble dictionary, so technically "Lets" would be an invalid word; I guess that could explain why it's sort of messily placed). The collection is suppose to include "...

Chip promises faster computing with light, not electrical wires

Image
A three-university project builds a prototype chip that communicates directly with fast fiber-optic links. Commercially viable versions are on the way. This silicon photonics chip communicates with fiber-optic links instead of electrical wires. Milos Popović/University of Colorado Boulder Today's computers may look very different from room-sized machines of the 1940s, but they still send data the same way, with electrical signals in metal wires. Researchers at three US universities, though, have built a chip that transmits data with light instead, lifting speed limits and lowering power consumption. The technology involved, called silicon photonics, is an active area of research at chipmakers like Intel and IBM, but so far it hasn't been a commercially viable idea. The researchers behind the new development -- at the University of California's Berkeley campus, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado's Boulder campus -- think they...

Police target UK's young cybercriminals

Teenagers committing crimes online are being targeted by the National Crime Agency. The campaign aims to warn young people about the dangers of hacking and using online tools for cyber-attacks. The CyberChoices campaign comes after NCA research revealed the average age of people involved in its investigations was 17. The research indicated few teenagers knew what constituted a cybercrime or what would happen if they were caught. Starting young "Over the past few years, the NCA has seen the people engaging in cybercrime becoming younger and younger," said Richard Jones, head of the Prevent team at the NCA's Cyber Crime Unit, in a statement. For example, he said, an NCA operation against users of an online attack tool known as Lizard Stresser resulted in seven people being arrested - all of whom were under 18 years old. The CyberChoices campaign builds on work the NCA did after Operation Dermic in 2014 against users of the Blackshades remote-access Trojan (Rat). A to...

Apple Maps now more popular than Google Maps on iPhone, iPad

Image
The company has worked to fix the flaws that plagued the app at its debut three years ago. The fact that Apple Maps is the default navigation app on Apple's devices has boosted its use as well. After a buggy debut and checkered early history, Apple Maps is now used more frequently than Google Maps on Apple's mobile devices. The iPhone maker revealed that Apple Maps is now used three times as often as its "next leading competitor," namely Google Maps, on Apple iPhones and iPads, the Associated Press reported Monday. Apple's navigation app tallies more than 5 billion map-related requests each week, the AP said. That's a major step for an app that was initially and widely criticized for its gaffes and inaccuracies following its debut in fall 2012. "" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;"> The improvements to Apple Maps may finally bring closure to an unhappy episode for the company. At the outset, Apple Maps packed a number of blu...

Your smartphone will be faster in 2016, just not insane 5G fast

Image
Ignore the hot air about 5G next year. Here's how the carriers will add more zip to your wireless connection. We've all been there. You pull out your smartphone to check out the trailer for "Batman v Superman," and the loading icon spins. And spins. Sometimes, the cellular network just can't keep up with your voracious appetite for Facebook updates, Snapchat messages and streaming video. Don't worry, though, the carriers are working on it. You may have heard rumblings of 5G. In 2016, you're going to hear a lot more about it. It's the next generation of wireless technology, and it promises to make the current 4G LTE connection feel like you're standing still. How fast is it? Downloading -- not just streaming -- the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" would take seconds with 5G, as opposed to minutes with 4G. "" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;"> It's the latest hook that carriers plan to trot out as th...

At $60K, Nokia's Ozo VR Camera Is Priced Right for Pro Filmmakers

Image
Nokia this week revealed its Ozo virtual reality camera system. Priced at US$60,000, it will ship in the first quarter of 2016. Nokia is clearly targeting a market a tier or two higher than the segment YouTube and GoProhave set their sights on with the Jump VR platform, which is about a fourth of Ozo's launch price. Priced for Pros Jump, a 360-degree, 16-camera rig, is Google on the software side and GoPro on hardware. Priced at around $15,000, it's within range of indie squads of YouTube filmmaking troupes and is already making a home atYouTube. Ozo, on the other hand, was purpose built for studios. The camera is wireless, with 360-degree audio and video and live monitor support. While its price may be too high for many YouTube content creators, it's low enough for studios that previously may have been hesitant to embrace VR because of the cost of equipment. Before the Ozo, experimenting with VR came at a high cost, Nokia said. The technology will let content...

Super-Earths, meet superpuffs, a lighter weight class of planet

Image
A gassy planet, close to its star, with a puzzlingly small mass. Not to be confused with a generic breakfast cereal, superpuffs are fluffy planets snuggled up to their suns. A superpuff develops its inflated persona by forming far from its star and then wandering inward, astronomers Eve Lee and Eugene Chiang of the University of California, Berkeley suggest online November 1 at arXiv.org. Starting out in the outskirts of a fledgling planetary system, the researchers say, would mean more cold gas is available to stick to a rocky core. Superpuffs are quite large for their mass. They typically weigh a few times as much as Earth but stretch up to 10 times as wide. That’s about as large as Jupiter but roughly one one-hundredth of its mass. These puffy worlds are the opposite of the rocky heavyweights known as super-Earths (SN: 4/18/15, p. 17), which have surprisingly little gas and live a bit farther out than where superpuffs end up. Unlike superpuffs, super-Earths probably...

Samsung Galaxy S7 release date, news and rumors

Image
Update: New rumors suggest the Galaxy S7 will look mostly like the Galaxy S6, with only a few tweaks to the design. It's looking ever more likely that the Galaxy S7 will arrive earlier than expected, and may come with microSD support. Samsung has also announced a new camera sensor, which could be used in the phone. And we've seen both the rumoured Exynos 8890 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipsets benchmarked. Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edgereinvigorated the flailing smartphone brand, giving it a new lease of life with a fresh design and some brand new features. Samsung is going to have to do a lot of work to be able to repeat the trick – but there's much more that can be improved on in the new phone, so there's plenty of scope. We don't expect to see the new handset until early 2016 though – usually Samsung takes time out in early March to announce its flagships at MWC in Barcelona, and we expect it to be the same again this year. However, rumor...

Lukaku Scores in Everton draw

Image
A stubborn Crystal Palace withstood a dominant second-half display from Everton to move into the top six of the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. Scott Dann opened the scoring for the away side in the 76th minute on Monday night, Palace having resisted a number of Everton attacks after the break, with Romelu Lukaku hitting the woodwork either side of the interval for the hosts. Wayne Rooney and son Kai were in attendance at Goodison to watch the England captain's former club in action The Belgium striker did eventually get on the scoresheet, tapping in Gerard Deulofeu's cutback just five minutes after the away side took the lead but it was a frustrating evening for Everton The sides were even throughout the opening 45 minutes but it was one-way traffic after the break, with the Palace defence somehow withstanding mounting Everton pressure before Dann broke the deadlock from a Palace move up to sixth spot in the table, with Everton a point behind in ninth. Lewandowski'open to Real move'

Real Madrid want to sign Robert Lewandowski and the Bayern Munich striker is open to the idea, according to Guillem Balague. Bayern want to renew Lewandowski's contract which expires in 2019 but Balague believes the Poland international is intrigued by the possibility of moving to the Bernabeu. "Those in the player's close circle view enormous potential in a possible Bale-Lewandowski partnership and feel the time is right for him to make the move to the Spanish capital," Balague said. "He never thought he would have the chance to join Madrid while Cristiano Ronaldo was at the peak of his form but in Poland, the belief is that the Portugal forward and Karim Benzema's time at the club is coming to an end." Lewandowski's agent Cezary Kucharski attended Real Madrid's game against Getafe on Saturday, sitting in the club's VIP box at the invitation of the club. Balague says Bayern will attempt to reward Lewandowski's spectacular form by ma...

Fergie: Don't sack 'great' Jose

Sir Alex Ferguson says Chelsea would be sacking "one of the best coaches of all time" if they got rid of Jose Mourinho. Saturday's home defeat to Bournemouth was an eighth in this season's Premier League for the reigning champions and brought an abrupt end to a recent improvement in results. And a report in Monday'sThe Times newspaper claimed Mourinho's job will be under threat if they fail to progress in the Champions League this week, despite a vote of confidence from the board back in October. That would be a huge mistake, according to the Portuguese's old Manchester United rival, who said: "[Roman Abramovich] has sacked so many coaches in the last 10 years that I am sure he has learned by it. He has to trust and have confidence Jose can turn around. "There is no point in sacking one of the best coaches of all time, he's won the European Cup twice, he's won the league in each country he's managed in, he's won the big trophi...

'Mourinho hanging on'

Chelsea's faith in Jose Mourinho is eroding and he could even leave before the crucial Champions League clash with Porto, according to the Daily Telegraph's Jason Burt. The defending Premier League champions hit a new low on Saturday Night Football as they were shocked 1-0 at home by newly-promoted Bournemouth. The loss leaves them 14 points off fourth place and they could be eliminated from the Champions League if they fail to beat Porto on Wednesday. "Do they give him the Porto game or do they make a change now? That's the ongoing debate at Chelsea," Burt told the Sunday Supplement. "Either they do have faith in him, which is I think is eroding all the time, or they are not sure what to do in terms of a replacement. I think they are considering a number of candidates" Jason Burt - Daily Telegraph chief football correspondent "The fact [Roman] Abramovich was at the game last night counts against Mourinho because the key now is the Champions L...

Smalling:Fans rightly unhappy

Chris Smalling admits Manchester United fans are right to voice their frustrations as the team's miserable form in front of goal continues. United's 0-0 stalemate against West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday was their sixth scoreless draw of the season and fifth in their last nine games, prompting a chorus of boos from the home fans upon the final whistle. Chants of "Attack! Attack" Attack!" have become synonymous with games at Old Trafford this season with Louis van Gaal's side managing just 20 goals in 15 league games. Anthony Martial reacts after missing a chance during the match between Manchester United and West Ham Central defender Smalling says the team's lack of potency up front is weighing on the players and knows Saturday's failure to beat West Ham was an opportunity missed following Manchester City's loss to Stoke earlier in the day. "Today was a massive frustration for us and it's so disappointing when you dominate a game...
